Product Description Prompts

Prompts for product pages that help shoppers decide: clear details, honest benefits and the answers they look for before buying.

About these prompts

Online shoppers cannot touch the product, so the description does the work a salesperson would do in a shop: what is it, is it right for me, what exactly do I get. AI assistants can turn a spreadsheet of specifications into readable descriptions quickly. The risk is that they also add things that are not true: invented materials, certifications, awards or health benefits.

The prompts below always give the assistant a fixed list of facts and tell it not to go beyond them. If you sell regulated products such as cosmetics, supplements, food or children's items, have every claim checked against the rules that apply to you.

Copy any prompt below, or build a custom one with the Prompt Builder. Highlighted [PLACEHOLDERS] are the parts to replace with your own details.

The prompts

01

One product, complete description

For a single important product page.

#
pd-single.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Write a product description for [PRODUCT NAME] sold by [STORE NAME].Facts (use only these): [MATERIALS, DIMENSIONS, WEIGHT, FEATURES, WHAT IS IN THE BOX, CARE INSTRUCTIONS]Who buys it: [IDEAL CUSTOMER]Why they buy it: [THE PROBLEM IT SOLVES OR THE OCCASION]Brand voice: [TONE]Give me: a one-line hook, a short paragraph (60 to 90 words) on who it is for and why it is useful, a bullet list of specifications, and care notes. Do not invent certifications, reviews, awards or health claims.
02

Consistent descriptions for many products

When you have a catalog to write.

#
pd-batch.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
I will paste product data for several items in this format: name | key features | materials | size.[PASTE ROWS]For each product, write a description using the same structure: a one-line hook, a 50 to 70 word paragraph, and 3 to 5 bullet points. Keep the voice consistent across all products ([TONE]). Make each opening line different so the pages do not all start the same way. Use only the data provided.

TipDo batches of 5 to 10 products. Long batches tend to drift in quality and accuracy toward the end.

03

Answer shopper questions on the page

When customers email the same questions about a product.

#
pd-questions.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Shoppers keep asking these questions about [PRODUCT NAME]: [QUESTIONS]Here are the answers: [ANSWERS]Write a short product FAQ (question and 1 to 3 sentence answer each), and suggest where in the product description each answer could be worked in so fewer people need to ask.
04

Size and fit guidance

For clothing, furniture or anything where fit matters.

#
pd-sizing.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Write size and fit guidance for [PRODUCT NAME].Measurements: [SIZE CHART OR DIMENSIONS]How it fits compared with typical sizing: [e.g. runs small]Common fit questions: [QUESTIONS]Write a short, clear section that helps someone choose the right size the first time, including how to measure. Use only the measurements given.

TipClear sizing guidance can reduce returns, which matters more to profit than a clever description.

05

Collection and category page intros

For category pages that need a short introduction.

#
pd-collection.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Write a 60 to 100 word introduction for the [CATEGORY NAME] category on my store, [STORE NAME].Products in it: [SUMMARY OF PRODUCTS]Who shops this category: [AUDIENCE]Help a shopper understand what is in the category and how to choose between items. Do not repeat the same wording as individual product pages.
06

Rewrite a manufacturer description

When you resell products and the supplier text is used everywhere.

#
pd-rewrite.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Here is the manufacturer's description of a product I resell: [PASTE]Rewrite it in my store's voice ([TONE]) for [MY CUSTOMERS]. Keep every fact accurate, remove marketing claims I cannot back up, and add a short section on who this product is best for and who should choose something else. Do not copy sentences from the original.

TipUsing the same manufacturer text as every other store gives search engines no reason to show your page. Adding your own guidance does.

Worked example

What a response looks like

The prompt we ran

Prompt 1 with: Sprout Linen Apron from Little Fern Home; 100% washed linen, one size with adjustable neck strap, two front pockets, machine washable; for home cooks and bakers.

The response

The apron you'll actually want to wear.

Made from soft washed linen, this apron is for home cooks and bakers who want something practical that still looks good hanging in the kitchen. The adjustable neck strap means one size fits most, and two deep front pockets keep a phone, a recipe card or a tea towel close by.

  • 100% washed linen
  • One size, adjustable neck strap
  • Two front pockets
  • Machine washable

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting the AI add materials, certifications or awards that are not in your data.
  • Health, safety or environmental claims you cannot prove.
  • Every product description starting with the same sentence.
  • Copying the manufacturer's text that hundreds of other stores also use.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer what a shopper needs to decide. Simple products may need 50 words and a spec list; expensive or technical products often need more, plus an FAQ.

Can I use AI for hundreds of product descriptions?

Yes, but check them. Batch generation is where invented details slip in. Spot-check every description against your product data before publishing.
