SEO Title and Meta Description Prompts

Prompts for the text people see in search results: page titles, meta descriptions and clear heading structures.

About these prompts

Your page title and meta description are often the first thing a searcher reads about you. A clear title helps search engines and people understand what a page is about, and a good description gives the searcher a reason to click. Google may rewrite either if it thinks something else on the page matches the search better, but well-written versions are still the best starting point.

Two practical guidelines: titles of roughly 50 to 60 characters and descriptions of roughly 150 to 160 characters usually display without being cut off, though search engines measure by pixel width, so treat these as rules of thumb. And every page should have a unique title and description that accurately describe it.

The prompts

01

Titles and descriptions for every page

When you are launching or tidying a site.

#

Write SEO titles and meta descriptions for the pages of [BUSINESS NAME], a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [LOCATION OR "online"].Pages:[PAGE NAME]: [ONE-LINE SUMMARY OF WHAT IS ON IT][PAGE NAME]: [ONE-LINE SUMMARY]For each page give 2 title options (about 50 to 60 characters) and 2 meta descriptions (about 140 to 160 characters), with character counts. Put the most important words first, make each one unique, describe the page honestly, and give the searcher a reason to click. No keyword stuffing.

TipCheck the character counts yourself. AI assistants are often inaccurate at counting characters.

02

Improve an underperforming title

When a page shows up in search but few people click.

#
seo-rewrite.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
This page gets impressions in search but few clicks.Current title: [TITLE]Current description: [DESCRIPTION]What the page actually offers: [SUMMARY]Searches it appears for: [QUERIES FROM SEARCH CONSOLE, IF YOU HAVE THEM]Explain why the current title and description might be weak, then write 4 improved versions of each that match what searchers are looking for and accurately describe the page.

TipGoogle Search Console shows which searches each page appears for. Pasting those queries in makes this prompt far more useful.

03

Heading structure for a page

When planning a page so it is easy to scan.

#
seo-headings.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
I am writing a page about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. The main question it answers is: [QUESTION].Suggest a clear heading structure: one H1 and 5 to 8 H2 headings, with H3s where useful. Each heading should tell the reader what that section covers. Then list the questions a reader would expect the page to answer that my headings do not yet cover.
04

Check what searchers want

Before writing a page you hope will rank.

#
seo-intent.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
I want a page to rank for searches like: [SEARCH PHRASE].Describe what someone typing this most likely wants: information, a comparison, a local business, a product to buy, or something else. Tell me what kind of page would best satisfy them, what it must include, and what would make it more useful than a typical result. Be honest if my business is not a good fit for this search.

TipMatching the page to what the searcher wants matters more than repeating the search phrase.

05

Write a clear summary paragraph

When you want the opening of a page to answer the question directly.

#
seo-snippet.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
Here is the draft of my page about [TOPIC]:[PASTE DRAFT]Write a 40 to 60 word opening paragraph that directly answers the main question of the page in plain language, before the details. Then tell me if anything in my draft contradicts it.
06

File names and alt text for page images

When adding images to a page.

#
seo-images.txtChatGPT ↗Claude ↗
This page is about [TOPIC]. It has these images:[DESCRIBE EACH IMAGE]For each image, suggest a descriptive file name (lowercase, words separated by hyphens) and alt text under about 125 characters that describes what matters about the image for someone who cannot see it. Do not stuff keywords into the alt text.

Worked example

What a response looks like

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the same title on every page.
  • Stuffing the same keyword into the title several times.
  • Writing a description that promises something the page does not deliver.
  • Trusting AI character counts without checking.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Google has said the meta description is not used as a ranking signal, but it often appears in search results, so it affects whether people click.

Why does Google show a different title than mine?

Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks other text on the page better describes the page for a particular search. Clear, accurate titles that match the page's main heading are rewritten less often.
